Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate how an adolescent from a dysfunctional family experienced meditation counseling and what was beneficial to the participant through it.

Methods: The participant was a first grade high school student, Seora (a girl) who had grown up in a dysfunctional family. This meditation counselling was conducted for 8 times once a week (one session, one hour) from Dec. 2016 to Jan. 2017. Data for this study were made up of transcriptions of the recording, field notes and meditation log book. This study has used the methodology of narrative inquiry by Clandinin and Connelly (2000).

Results: The experience of the meditation counselling for the participant could be interpreted as 'embarrassment and resistance' and 'acceptance and encounter'. The meditation counselling enabled her to face and accept herself who had difficulties in facing herself and relationship with others. As a result, the changes have been seen in the aspects of the recovery of self-esteem, the planning of her future and the improvement of the relationship with others.

Conclusion: This study has contributed to understand the psychological problems of the adolescent in a dysfunctional family and that what she experienced and how the experience changed her life.
